Today’s Must-Know

The courts have evidence on Jonathan Ross. Will it make a difference?

The U.S. District Court for Minnesota now has evidence related to the killing of Renee Good by ICE agent Jonathan Ross. The Star Tribune reports it’s not clear what evidence was provided, but this may be the first time the federal government has turned over information related to the three ICE shootings this winter. [Star Tribune]

  • Investigations stymied: Seemingly everyone wants evidence from the feds, but they’ve given the state, local investigators, and Good’s family the cold shoulder. In April, Good’s widow Becca Good asked a judge to force the federal government to return the Honda Pilot her wife was driving. Becca Good says she needs the car to potentially pursue a lawsuit. [MPR News]
  • Related case: The case of a man convicted of dragging Ross with his car has been a kind of backdoor for info about the agent. In June, Ross and other agents stopped Roberto Carlos Muñoz-Guatemala on an immigration order. Ross smashed Muñoz-Guatemala’s car window and stuck his arm inside, after which Muñoz-Guatemala sped away. He was convicted in December, but his lawyers said they might have argued Muñoz-Guatemala was justified in resisting if he had been tried after Good was killed. [WIRED]
  • Interesting: The Star Tribune also reports that the federal government still has not officially identified the agents involved in all three shootings to Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. [Star Tribune]

What the Cities Are Talking About

Fraud claims: Attorney General Keith Ellison is suing North Minneapolis nonprofit founders for allegedly spending $2 million meant for charity on luxury items and vacations. Sharon and Larry Cook are the founders of Real Believers Faith Center and Les Jolies School of Dance. The couple made headlines when they purchased the Marathon gas station on West Broadway, but the lawsuit claims they never owned the gas station at all. The couple has denied the allegations. Get arty elsewhere: The Uptown Art Fair is coming back, but not to Uptown – well, I guess it depends on who you ask. The Uptown Association announced the fair will be situated along Lake of Isles Parkway after two years away at Bachman’s (definitely not Uptown). [Star Tribune]

OPE: I got a little chuckle out of comedy-music duo Koo Koo dancing to their song “OPE” over greenscreened buffalo check. The state tourism board got Bryan Atchison and Neil Olstad to film a dance-a-long to their song to stir some local pride. They even released an “ICE out” remix of the song. [Explore Minnesota]

Process drama: Mayor Jacob Frey wants Police Chief Brian O’Hara to serve another term, but the City Council may not agree. They’ve already voted against confirming O’Hara’s boss Commissioner of Public Safety Todd Barnette. On Wednesday, the Charter Commission declined to eliminate the process where the City Council confirms appointments like O’Hara’s or Barnette’s. [MPR News / Wedge LIVE]

Detainments continue: Minneapolis Councilmember Jason Chavez says two residents were taken by ICE in South Minneapolis this week. “Our neighbors are still under attack, and we cannot ever forget what our community is being put through,” Chavez wrote in a social media post. WE DID IT! We hit our new member goal! Thank you to Melissa B., Dom P.J., and Cassandra J. for getting us over the finish line. Hopefully we’ll see you for tea tasting at Northeast Tea House.

Also, your Friday Floof is Cinnamon (middle name Roll). Cinnamon’s owner Wava J. said: “Saved from an abusive situation, Cinnamon is the sweetest, goofiest, old dog I've had the pleasure to have. She's a walking floofball who loves to follow you around and guard you from any dangers (aka any fallen people food, especially if it's chicken). Her favorite activity is napping in the sun and smiling at strangers, and of course barking a solid hello at them.” You can submit your pet here. 🐾
