Your Daily Guide

Good morning, Twin Cities! It’s Adam today. I just got back from a trip, and I feel like I was gone from the Twin Cities forever. I'm so excited to be here to check out all of the art studios and music festivals across Northeast Minneapolis for Art-A-Whirl this weekend. If you missed it, make sure to check out our Art-A-Whirl guide to make sure you get the most out of one of the best weekends of the year!

Today’s Must-Know

Nothing beats a hike around the falls followed by a delicious sandwich from Sea Salt. (Adam Sage / City Cast Twin Cities)

Best Twin Cities Double Features

A double (or triple) feature is a great way to spend a day – take your car, bike, or public transit to one single spot to enjoy multiple activities. Here are some of the best double features the Twin Cities has to offer. [🎧 City Cast Twin Cities]

  • Unbeatable: Minnehaha falls and Sea Salt. I think this is the most obvious one, but there isn't another city in the world where you can hike around a 53-foot waterfall and grab a fried catfish po' boy within the city limits. Take your out-of-town friends on this one, or treat yourself solo on a slow Saturday.
  • Gourmet dinner, great dessert, and a cheap beer: Get it all on one magnificent block in Northeast Minneapolis by going from Hai Hai to Mrs. Dessert & Kumpir to Grumpy's Northeast. I've done this triple feature many times, and it's one of my favorite ways to spend a Friday night. Pro tip: Mrs. Dessert & Kumpir has great baklava and ice cream, but don't overlook the humble tres leches cake served in a plastic to-go container. It's perfectly soaked, sweet, and my favorite tres leches cake I've ever had.
  • Go with the flow: For the most relaxing self-care Sunday, head to the Trylon Cinema at 3 p.m. to catch their matinee showing – watch whatever is playing, they have great taste. Afterwards, walk over to Arbeiter Brewing for some food from whichever food truck is there, grab a brew, and finish your day by browsing Moon Palace Books, which is housed in the same building as Arbeiter.
  • Spirits and winter sports: Have a uniquely Twin Cities night out by grabbing dinner and a vodka flight from Moscow on the Hill, and then watching some curling at the St. Paul Curling Club. There's a big bonspiel (curling tournament) happening at the club this weekend, so now is your chance to check it out!

What the Cities Are Talking About

Questions remain: The family of Desaver Hollis, a Black man who was shot and killed by Richfield police last month, are questioning RPD's narrative after reviewing body cam footage. Released body camera footage appears to show Hollis shooting an officer in the hand before police fire 20 shots at Hollis. The family's attorney questioned whether firing 20 shots was excessive force. [MPR News / WCCO]

Beaglemania: 1,500 beagles from Ridglan Farms are still looking for their forever homes in Minnesota, as many of them are getting to touch grass, try a pup cup, and have their tummy rubbed for the first time. Minnetonka-based rescue The Bond Between has already placed 30 beagles into foster homes, and will put them up for adoption when the dogs are ready. The Winona Area Humane Society has just received 20 beagles and is seeking donations to get them spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and ready for adoption. [Winona Area Humane Society]

'Sunset on Lake Burger King': West St. Paul's "newest body of water" is a massive puddle that has coalesced on the site of a demolished Burger King on Robert Street. Residents were excited when plans were announced to build a Popeyes at the site last year, but plans have stalled. Now, city officials don't know what's next for the spot. [Star Tribune]

Flames at MSP: If you're flying this week, don't be alarmed by flames or smoke in the northwest end of the airfield at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. The MSP Fire Department will be completing federally-required training with live flames through Thursday of this week. No airport operations will be impacted. [Pioneer Press]

Suing ICE agents: The Minnesota Senate passed a bill that would allow residents to sue ICE agents in state court for violations of their constitutional rights. A 2022 Supreme Court case made it nearly impossible to sue federal agents without approval from Congress, but some legal scholars believe that state legislatures can also authorize legal action against federal agents. We're unlikely to see that legal battle play out though, as the bill will almost certainly die in the Minnesota House of Representatives as the legislative session ends this week.
